Our Community Partners

As people called, gathered, and sent by the Holy Spirit, Christ Lutheran Church makes community service a top priority.

Caring for God’s people and God’s world is a joy for us.  We work with several groups to provide vital services in Monticello and Piatt County.

A Small Hand – Piatt County Cares

A Small Hand distributes diapers, formula and baby supplies to young families in need.  It also offers emergency assistance to families in Piatt County.  Christ Lutheran Church has supported A Small Hand in various ways:

  • Two of our members, Donna Witt and Karen Molloy, volunteer and serve on A Small Hand – Piatt County Cares Board.
  • CLC provides collection bins for coat/clothing/and baby supplies.
  • It financially supports A Small Hand through benevolence offerings.

Starting Out Right

Starting Out Right is part of A Small Hand – Piatt County Cares community ministry.  Every year, Christ Lutheran Church provides volunteers and helps A Small Hand collect and assemble school supplies for Piatt County children from Kindergarten to High School.

Approximately, 300 children in Piatt County received school supplies for the  2018-19 school year.

Monticello Fighting Hunger

After Christ Lutheran Church (CLC) participated in a food packaging event through Kids Against Hunger in 2014, several CLC members wanted to do the same thing on a larger scale. Inspired by a University of Illinois campus event (147,000 meals for the Eastern Illinois Food Bank), CLC volunteers contacted Illini Fighting Hunger about doing something similar in Monticello. People from local government agencies, schools, various churches, and businesses in the Monticello area gathered together to plan an all-day packaging event with the goal of 100,000 meals for hungry families in Central Illinois.

Vision became reality on Saturday, February 28, 2015, when hundreds of volunteers met at Monticello Middle School to pack 105,840 meals for Piatt County food pantries and the Eastern Illinois Food Bank. CLC was a major supporter of the event, and it was a major part of our life together in the months leading up to that day:

  • CLC members Ann Hehn and Charlie Montgomery served with many wonderful folks from the community on the steering committee for Monticello Fighting Hunger.
  • CLC ensured that over $13,000 in cash donations were tax-deductible.
  • We sent more than 20 volunteers to the packaging event; a large CLC group worked together during the last shift. Here’s our crew at the end of the day!

Piatt County Ecumenical Food Pantry

The Piatt County Food Pantry, housed at the Monticello United Methodist Church, provides non-perishable foods and County Market vouchers for perishable items.  The Food Pantry is an essential link to other assistance services, including the Community Action Partnership of Central Illinois.

Christ Lutheran Church supports the Food Pantry with frequent food drives, and the 1st Sunday of every month is designated as Food Pantry Sunday.
